How to Rank Higher on Google Maps: What Actually Moves the Needle

If your customers find you through Google Maps, your position in the local pack is effectively your storefront. The three businesses in that pack collect the large majority of clicks and calls for local searches, and everyone below them splits what's left.

Plenty has been written about how to get there, and most of it repeats the same checklist. The checklist is real, and we'll cover it. But it's also what every one of your competitors is doing, which is exactly why it stops being enough in a competitive market.

How Google decides who ranks on Maps.

Google has publicly stated that local results are ranked on three things: relevance (how well your listing matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and well-regarded your business appears to be).

Distance is largely out of your hands. Relevance and prominence are where the work happens, and prominence in particular covers more ground than most owners realize: reviews, citations, links, and — increasingly — how real searchers behave when your listing shows up.

Start with the table stakes.

Before anything else, your Google Business Profile needs to be complete and accurate. Google fills the local pack from profiles it trusts:

Pick the right primary category. This single field does more for relevance than anything else on your profile. "Personal injury attorney" and "law firm" produce different results.

Complete every section. Hours, services, description, attributes, photos. Profiles with regular photo updates and filled-out services consistently outperform sparse ones.

Keep your name, address, and phone consistent across your website and the directories that matter in your industry.

Collect reviews steadily and reply to them. Velocity and recency count, and review text is a relevance signal in its own right — customers who mention the service they hired you for are helping you rank for it.

Do all of that. Also understand that in any market worth competing in, the other businesses in the pack have done all of it too.

The factor most businesses never touch.

Google watches how searchers interact with local results: which listings get clicked, which get skipped, who clicks through to a website, who goes back to the results and picks someone else. Whitespark's 2026 local ranking factors survey found engagement signals to be the fastest-rising factor group, and we've written before about why behavioral signals now drive local rankings.

The evidence here is unusually strong for SEO. The Sterling Sky experiment moved local rankings live, in public, with nothing but coordinated real clicks — and rankings receded when the clicks stopped. The DOJ antitrust trial confirmed that Google's NavBoost system feeds click behavior directly into rankings.

In practice this means a listing that earns more clicks than its position predicts tends to move up, because Google reads that preference as relevance. It also means the effect is ongoing rather than one-time; consistent engagement sustains it, which is why we treat CTR work as an always-on signal rather than a sprint.

This is the layer SerpClix Local works on: real human clickers search your keyword on Google Maps, find your listing, and click through to your site — the same behavior your customers produce, from real people on residential connections. One practical note from that page applies to any local campaign, ours or not: build your city into the keyword ("dentist in Austin," "roof repair Mesa AZ") so every search resolves to your market. Skip "near me" phrasing; it ties the results to wherever the searcher happens to be.

A realistic order of operations.

First, measure. You can't tell whether anything worked if you don't know where you started. Our free Google Maps rank checker pulls the live Maps results for any keyword and shows exactly where your listing sits. No signup.

Fix the profile fundamentals — category first, then completeness, then a steady review cadence.

Pick three to five money keywords, each with your city in the phrase, and track them weekly.

Add the engagement layer. Once the foundation is solid, behavioral signals are usually the highest-leverage factor left, because they're the one your competitors aren't working on.

There are no guarantees in SEO, and your position also depends on things nobody controls — where the searcher is standing, how entrenched the competition is. But of the factors you can influence, this ordering puts the effort where the movement is.
