Google Made AI Mode the Default β€” Every Remaining Click Is Worth More

Zero-click searches hit 68% and AI Overviews cut organic CTR 61% β€” the clicks that survive carry more weight per click

Google Made AI Mode the Default β€” Every Remaining Click Is Worth More

At Google I/O 2026 in May, Google made AI Mode the default search experience worldwide — no longer a tab you opt into, but the way more than a billion people now meet the search box.

The click math around that shift deserves a close read.

The numbers, from primary sources.

SparkToro's 2026 analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found that 68% of US Google searches now end without a click to the open web, up from about 60% in 2024. Semrush studied 69 million search sessions and found that roughly 93% of AI Mode sessions end without a single visit to an external site — though the AI Mode clicks that do happen tend to send unusually engaged visitors. And Seer Interactive's ongoing CTR tracking shows that when an AI Overview appears, organic CTR falls 61%, from 1.76% down to 0.61%.

One number in that same Seer dataset points the other way: brands cited inside AI Overviews earned 35% more organic clicks than brands that weren't cited.

Put those together and clicks aren't disappearing so much as concentrating. Fewer of them exist, and they pool around the results searchers still choose deliberately.

Why scarcer clicks carry more weight.

That concentration matters for anyone paying attention to engagement signals. At the Google antitrust trial, VP of Search Pandu Nayak testified that NavBoost (the system built on how searchers interact with results on the SERP) is "one of the important signals that we have." Click behavior is documented input to ranking.

When the total pool of clicks on a query shrinks, each real click that remains makes up a larger share of the behavioral evidence Google collects for that query. The surviving clicks carry more relative weight, simply because there are fewer of them to average across.

To be clear about the limits of that argument: nobody outside Google knows the exact weighting, and there are no guarantees in SEO. What the record does support is that Google's click-quality systems measure real human engagement, and real human engagement is the one input a bot farm can't fake convincingly.

So while the zero-click headlines read as bad news, the practical takeaway is narrower. Organic clicks are becoming scarcer, and scarcity raises the value of each one you earn. Winning a larger share of the clicks that remain — through better titles, AI Overview citations, and genuine engagement on the visits you do get — is where the leverage now sits.
