AI Overviews Just Cut Organic CTR by 61% — Here’s What the Data Shows
AI Overviews appear on half of all searches. The click impact is severe — but not uniform.
New data from Seer Interactive shows that organic CTR drops 61% when AI Overviews appear — and they now show up on roughly half of all Google searches. Here’s what that means for your traffic.
Google’s AI Overviews have gone from experiment to default. They now appear on roughly half of all Google searches — some studies put the number closer to 60%. That rollout happened fast, and the click data that followed is brutal.
Seer Interactive analyzed what happens to clicks when an AI Overview shows up on the results page. The numbers:
• Organic CTR dropped 61%
• Only 8% of users clicked an organic result when an AI Overview was present, compared to 15% without one
• Paid CTR crashed even harder — down 68%
Read that second point again. When there’s no AI Overview, about 15 out of every 100 searchers click an organic result. When there is one, that drops to 8. Nearly half the clicks, gone.
Not all queries are hit equally.
This matters. The hardest-hit queries are informational — the “what is,” “how does,” “when did” searches where Google can synthesize an answer from existing content and serve it directly. For those queries, the AI Overview often answers the question well enough that the user never scrolls down.
But commercial and transactional queries tell a different story. Searches like “best project management software” or “CRM for small agencies” still drive clicks, because a three-paragraph AI summary can’t replace the process of comparing options, reading reviews, and evaluating whether a product fits your specific needs. Buyers still want to click through and see for themselves.
If your traffic is heavily weighted toward informational content, you’re feeling this already. If your traffic comes from commercial and transactional queries, you have more runway — but not unlimited.
There’s a flip side to these numbers.
Here’s what most coverage of this data misses: brands that are cited inside AI Overviews actually benefit. Research shows that sites referenced in an AI Overview earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than they did before. Being a source that Google pulls from turns the AI Overview from a threat into a distribution channel.
That creates a sharp divide. If Google’s AI cites you, your visibility goes up. If it doesn’t, your listing gets buried under a wall of generated text that most users never scroll past.
The shrinking click pool changes the math on everything.
When half of all searches now feature an AI Overview, and organic CTR drops 61% on those searches, the total number of organic clicks available across the web is contracting significantly. Fewer clicks to go around means more competition for every one that remains.
This makes CTR optimization more important, not less. In a world with abundant clicks, a mediocre click-through rate was survivable. In a world where the click pool is shrinking by the month, every percentage point of CTR you can gain — or lose — has an outsized impact on your traffic and your rankings.
The queries still generating clicks are the ones with real commercial value. Those are the clicks worth fighting for. And sending real human engagement signals on those high-value queries is exactly the kind of edge that compounds when everyone else is losing ground.
